La Befana vien di notte
In Italian folklore, Befana is an old woman who delivers gifts to children throughout Italy on Epiphany Eve (the night of January 5) in a similar way to St Nicholas or Santa Claus. But children get gifts from both Father Christmas and Befana.
There are many variations of the popular rhymes:
La Befana vien di notte
con le scarpe tutte rotte
col vestito alla romana:
Viva viva la Befana!
La befana vien di notte
con le scarpe tutte rotte
porta un sacco pien di doni
da regalare ai bimbi buoni
La befana vien di notte
con le scarpe tutte rotte
viene e bussa alla tua porta
sai tu dirmi che ti porta?
And many others…
The biggest Christmas nativity scene
Cingue Terre : Il presepe luminoso più’ grande del mondo
Every year in Monarola the lights of the biggest Christmas nativity scene are set, Il presepe that occupies the entire Hill of Three Crosses and the nature of the Ligurian village becomes all of a sudden covered with a special magic.
Presepe was designed and built by Mr. Mario Andreoli, who worked on the railway in the past and now he is in retirement at the moment. Since 1976 he has devoted his life to the realization of this unique project, and after 30 years, he finally managed to cover the entire hill. At last, Presepe sparkled like a rainbow at Christmas 2007 and was immediately added to the Guinness World Records. 7 miles of electric cables, 15,000 fires, 300 figures at full-scale which were made of the processed or unused materials were spent for implementation of this project. Since 2008, Presepe is also environmentally safe. Photovoltaic factory was built especially for it and this factory supplies electricity to maintain it, by the way, and its consumption in the last mountain was 13.440 kWh / year.

When is the Night of San Lorenzo ?
One of the most awaited natural event in Italy is La Notte di San Lorenzo, the night of wishing stars. Every year on the night between the 9th and the 10th of the August millions of Italians turn their faces up in the sky trying to catch the falling star and make a wish !
Although there is scientific explanation of this phenomenon, we won’t go this far, we will stay romantic and repeat the incantation, “Stella, mia bella Stella, desidero che…” on La Notte di San Lorenzo to be granted your heart’s desire.
